Defeating The Odds

T'Wanta Moore is a first-generation college graduate who knew at an early age that she wanted to become an educator. Choosing this path in life was based on personal experiences.

When T'Wanta entered into her college career, she quickly realized that she was not exposed to the same academic resources as her peers. She was short of the background knowledge needed to succeed academically and was under-prepared for the college level coursework, and strongly believes that this is why it took her ten years to finish her undergraduate studies. From this experience, T'Wanta knows first-hand on what it means to close the achievement gap.

In the spring of 2015, T'Wanta graduated summa cum laude from Huston-Tillotson University with a degree in English. Keeping to her promise to give back to children who were like herself, she obtained a job at Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy teaching English Language arts that fall. Her objective was to use academic study, and life experience to provide effective instruction for all students. She understood first hand that quality education amongst minority youth was a critical issue faced in today's society. Building a love for learning and increasing the retention rate had become her top priority. Now in her new academic arena, she has set her mind on evolving and to diversifying quality education no matter the individual's social economic statutes.

T'Wanta quickly became involved in her student's growth and focused on culturally relevant teaching methods "a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes"(Gloria, Landen-Billing, 1994).  In order to close the achievement gap, she understood that you have to reach the students were they are at and then take them where you need for them to go.

In December 2016, T'Wanta graduated Texas State University with a Master's Degree in developmental literacy, understanding that minority youth lacked reading development skills she wanted to increase her awareness and improve classroom instruction.

Her job as an educator and mom of three is endless, but she is determined to help students Defeat The Odds.
